TO SCHEDULE AN INTERVIEW: If possible, we'd like to receive your completed leadership application before we set up an interview. Four days or so after you mail us your application (to the attention of "LEADERSHIP"), call our office between 9 - 5 to schedule an interview on one of the above dates. If you apply after April 25, we need you to help expedite matters in any way you can - especially the scheduling of your interview. Please phone with any questions -in fact, this is a wise idea generally if you want a prompt answer to your question(s). If you have a special situation, be sure it is discussed only with the Director.

IMPORTANT! YOU HAVE BEEN ASKED ON YOUR LEADERSHIP APPLICATION FOR 3 REFERENCES. EMPLOYERS, CO-WORKERS, PROFESSORS AND ADVISORS ARE EXAMPLES OF ACCEPTABLE REFERENCES. WE REGRET THAT FRIENDS, ROOMMATES, ACQUAINTANCES, ETC., ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE AS REFERENCES FOR OUR PURPOSES.

OUR APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE! AFTER YOUR INTERVIEW, IF YOU ARE STILL INTERESTED IN LEADING, YOU WILL NEED TO SIGN FORMS ALLOWING US TO DO A STATE - MANDATED CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK.

TRAINING COURSE DATES- 2007

SENIOR and ASSISTANT LEADERS must take the following training course [if you are unable to participate in all or part of this course, you must speak with Ted Lefkowitz, the director, BEFORE your interview -THIS ESPECIALLY APPLIES TO TEACHERS]:

LTC - 2007: 9 PM Friday, June 15 to 7 PM Wednesday, June 20

TIME COMMITMENTS AND SALARIES- 2007

VERY IMPORTANT!! IF YOU ARE ABLE TO LEAD ONLY IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST, WE REGRET TO TELL YOU THAT IT IS UNLIKELY YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LEAD. Most of our trips take place during the first part of the summer. August trips are usually assigned to people who have committed to leading both parts of the summer (trips in July and August).

ALSO VERY IMPORTANT - Be sure to give us complete and updated information on any water - safety certification(s) you may have. All leaders must have standard first - aid certification at the time of their trip but it would be VERY helpful to also have certification in water - safety and life - saving skills/lifeguarding.

A minimum time commitment of 4 weeks is required (including the pre - trip and post - trip requirements). Your trip commitment begins 4 or 5 days prior to your trip's listed starting date and ends 3 days after your trip's last day. During these days, leaders will work on preparation and review of their trip and help with other SHP organizational work such as driving, bike repair, grounds preparation, office work, etc. Leading 2 or more trips is possible as well as leading for most of the summer. When leading more than one trip, the "4 days prior/3 days after" time commitment does not always apply (appropriate salary adjustments will be made.)

Salary amounts are calculated by adding actual trip days plus pre - trip and post - trip days, then multiplying by the appropriate daily rate for senior and assistant leaders. All of your expenses (except for personal spending money) on the trip are paid for. Leaders can borrow rear panniers and handlebar bags but must provide all other equipment (all other equipment can be purchased new and at cost from SHP).

A senior leader example: You lead a 25 - day trip. We calculate your salary by adding your 7 pre - trip and post -trip days to the 25 trip days for a total of 32 days. We multiply the 32 days by the senior leader daily salary ($40) for a a total of $1280.00.

Using the same example for the assistant leader, we multiply the 32 days by the assistant leader daily salary ($30) for a total of $960.00.

If you were to lead two trips or all summer, you total the number of actual trip days as listed in the . "Discovery" brochure and add the pre - trip and post - trip days (at least 7) and multiply by the daily rate as in the sample above.

More information about salaries and other aspects of leadership are contained in the leadership information booklet and application and in the "Discovery" booklet.

IMPORTANT NOTE - WE REGRET THAT PHONE INTERVIEWS ARE NOT POSSIBLE.
